Halogenated ions, including chlorides, can attack the passivation layer of the stainless steel used in instruments and create pitting, rendering it susceptible to bacterial growth. Calcium, silica or dissolved metals can damage steam generators and create deposits or stains.

Elmatec has developed a processing chain, tried and tested in more than 70 clinics, hospitals and sterilization centers throughout France. This processing chain meets the requirements of standard NF EN 285 – Annex B: 2105, which has replaced standard NF EN 285+A2 since January 2019.

Conventional method

Starting with drinking water, under Ministerial Order of January 11, 2007 – Annex 1, our standard solution consists of:

  • Cartridge filtration. The cartridges are integrated into single or multi-cartridge filter housings depending on the flow rate and equipped with pressure measurement instrumentation and sampling ports. We offer deep filtration cartridges made of polypropylene material with a cut-off threshold of 10, 20 or 50 µm.
  • Water softening. We offer single, duplex and triplex softeners with parallel or alternating operation. For steam generators and boilers, the water hardness at the outlet is less than 0.1 °f. A mixing system is used to produce water with hardness of 5 °f for the domestic hot water (DHW) system.
  • Dechlorination with activated carbon. Our activated carbon cartridges have a high chlorine adsorption capacity. Activated carbon is required to protect reverse osmosis membranes.
  • Single-pass or double-pass reverse osmosis. Our range is designed for production flow rates ranging from 50 to 1500 L/h. The osmosis unit produces low conductivity water by retaining up to 99.8% of mineral salts.
  • EDI allows us to obtain conductivity below 5 µS/cm.
  • We offer a fully equipped storage tank: antibacterial vent filter, aseptic overflow, integral drain and spray ball.
  • Distribution loop.

Thus, we can deliver softened water (0°f and/or 5°f) for the pre-wash and wash phases to avoid scale deposits on the instruments. We also supply RO water with conductivity of less than 5 µS/cm at 20°C, a chloride concentration of less than 0.5 mg/l and hardness of less than 0.02 mmol/L, while preventing bacteriological risks for the rinsing, disinfection and steam generation phases.

The storage and distribution of the water must be controlled to prevent the risk of bacteria on instruments. Our reverse osmosis water loops are manufactured in accordance with recognized trade practices and use polyethersulfone (PES) 0.2 µm filters of proven quality for their antibacterial efficiency. We use a hydrophobic 0.2 µm filter vent cartridge on the RO tank. A maintenance service including regular disinfection of the treatment chain ensures that the quality of the water distributed is maintained.

The conventional treatment can be completed by:

  • Online water hardness analysis
  • Online chlorine analysis of feedwater
  • An online analysis of silica
  • Storage tank ozonation
  • A UV generator
  • A second distribution pump
  • A remote operating data report (CTM)
  • A heat exchanger

The data required to design your installation

The following data is required according to standard NF285 and your specific needs:

  • Your environment: raw water quality and available pressure
  • Your requirements: number of washers, autoclave to be supplied, number of cycles per day, daily operating time.
  • The technical data sheet of the equipment to be supplied as per EN NF285 art 25.2 indicating the maximum instantaneous flow rate, the minimum pressure to be supplied and the consumption per cycle.
  • Your constraints: available space, the distance between the sterilization unit and the equipment, continuity of service during installation, specific seasonal activity.

Endoscopy

According to the recommendations DGS/5CDHOZ/EZ/2001/138 for the reduction of the risks of transmission of Non-Conventional Transmissible Agents (NCTA), we propose a treatment system consisting of deep filtration of sediments (10 µm and 1 µm) and sterilizing filtration (0.2 µm – pleated PES cartridges from the Memtrex range).
